chainsaw chain

I bought a new electric chainsaw. The manual says "all chains will be .050 guage, 3/8 pitch with 58 drive links".

This is a for a 16 inch bar.

And this is turning out to be a bit of a challenge to find.

Would a chain with 57 links work okay?

If it's designed to run with 58, 57 would probably be too short when it's new. After the chain stretched a little it might work, but you've got to get it on the saw and use it for it to stretch.

Try to find a small engine/chain saw dealer that makes up loops. He can make you one with the right number of links off his spool. It'll probably be a little cheaper, and most likely better quality chain.

It could be a misprint. Why not call the company and ask?

I dotn know whay that is a challange to find. I make them all the time. 3/8 .050 is veryy common chain.

Ill make you one for $8, and you pay the shipping. I think it will be about $4

Also check the bar tensioning nut. On some makes (Remington), this part is made from a piece of stamped metal which can break very easily. It's possible to make a replacement from an older style square nut with a "blob" welded onto one edge.
Then grind it down to fit. Looking at the part will explain it more easily.

Stores that specialise in saws usually have bulk chain in different gauges and can make up the chain you need.

Just learned of chainsaw chains made with carbide tips. Not inexpensive, but may be worth the investment, if used extensively.

Wouldn't there be enough room in the adjustment screw to go up or down one link?

That's where I was going to tell you to check if you could wait for it. That's where I always get mine unless I need it right now. I broke the only two I had a few weeks ago and bought one at lowes. Actually I bought a chain and bar together for $24.99 or 29.99.
If you need one fast, Lowes has about all sizes. At least they do here.

ok, how stupid is it to pay $12 for their chain, AND pay shiping after I told you I would sell and ship a new chain for $12?

Why do you insist on buying from big stores?

You need to find a small mom & pop shop to buy from.

Stay off the internet, and out of Lowes. THey are both screwing the little shops.

If you need one fast go to a little saw shop, and they wil make one while you wait.

when the economy collapses, lowes is gone, and you have run the little saw shop owner out of town, then what are you going to do brainchild?

uhh sounds pretty dumb to me.. kinda ignorant to not support a small business even when they are cheaper. there would be no big chains if it wasn't for the hometown businesses that started it all back in the day. then again I'm only 17.
