Turn it clockwise, if the engine speeds up, then turn it counter-clockwise.

On my last carborated vehicle, a Toyota pickup, there were two adjustment screws, the idle speed, and the idle mixture. Does your's have both? If so, adjust the mixture screw first. To get the right mix, adjust the mixture back and forth till you find the setting which gives you maximum RPM, then turn the screw in (leaning) till the RPM drops about 50RPM. Then adjust your final idle speed. I assume you're using a tachometer. Don't even bother trying to adjust it if you don't have a tach.

The thing just idles real high and I want to tone it down. Yes I have a mixture screw. But it takes some kind of special tool to turn it, I turned the idle speed a quarter turn yesterday. Didnt notice any significant difference in it today. If not by tomorrow, Ill turn it another turnclockwise

Has it always idled at this speed? If not it may need a good cleaning as it may not may closing all the way at idle (throttle plate)

Hey.

If you don't give specifics of the vehicle in question, how can anybody help you? You know...what year...what make...what size engine...1 barrel...two barrel....four barrel...car...truck...tractor....rc plane

Otherwise we guess and say the fast idle solenoid needs adjustment or replacement.

For those wanting to know

You turn the screw COUNTER CLOCKWISE to lower the idleing speed

On some it's turned clockwise and on some it's turned counterclockwise. Not intending to be a smart ..... but if I wanted it to idle down I turned it one way, if the engine speed increased I turned it the other way. The screw turned will be the one screw/bolt that the throttle linkage rests against when the engine is at idle.

I would FIRST look to see if there are any rubber vacuum lines that are loose, or split. That will make one idle too high.
