Can you identify this gas cap?

Can you identify this gas cap? - Shop Talk

it's a 60's Ford cap that went on the back center of a car... I just can't figure out which car exactly.

Anyone know?

1970s

Sorry, I can't help. I would have pegged it as being from the 1970s.

Thumbs up

NICE FIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I belive that is going to be a falcon gas cap but not sure I am currently looking for some older pics. It apears to be a LTD or Galaxie emblem but I don't recall either of those with an exposed cap (they where behind the license plate). Possibly a Fairlane fastback as well.

Will let you know if i find it for sure.

68-69 Torino/Fairlane cap is in the rear bumper, behind the license plate. That is not one of those. They are just a regular cap. I have a 69 Fairlane, and owned a 68 Torino.

The design was used by Ford in its upscale Mercury trim lines. The cap looks remarkably like a Mustang cap. It may very well be a Mercury Cougar cap, the Cougar being the Mercury version of the Mustang. That would be my guess. I'd guess a 1970.

There are very, very few Ford car models that used an exposed cap. Another remote possibility is a Ranchero, though the cap looks entirely different than a Ranchero style cap.

hmmm, some torino's do (the fastbacks I believe) and all the Mavericks do.

And I believe the fastback fairlane does also.

SS,

Jim may be onto something with the maverick/comet. I had forgotten about those cars. Like he said there are not a lot of Fords or Mercs with rear facing exposed caps.

It's not a maverick... I've sold plenty of them.

I think it could be old cougar, but I can't find one to compare it to.

Definetely a Mercury. I'd say it is from a Cougar. Not sure of the year though.

Not LTD, and know it ain't Torino. They were behind the plate on all Fairlane/Torino models. The symbol is DEFINITELY Mercury. That pretty much narrows it, but on further research it is not Cougar, because Cougar had the cap behind the plate, as well.

That leads me to just one possible conclusion. It must either be original Comet, or a replacement cap for the Comet. Here's a news clip on the '71, a Ford Maverick clone. Possibly there was a "loaded" package that used that cap design.

And Jim S. wins the prize The fastback torino and fairlane have a large emblem in the center of tailight panel with gas tank filler behind the tag.

Where did you find it Jim? I've been browsing when i had a chance but no rear pics. showed any where.

Just wanted to say thanks all. I think it's a "Comet Deluxe" around 71 or so... according to this thread:
