Wax Ring on Potty ?

We're replacing a toilet today and when we took up the old one there was no wax ring like we are use to seeing, but a lil plastic doo-hickie thingie. Yes, dad aint here and we cant get hold to him, so HELP!!!
Is it a "better" ring that was there, should we replace it, it looks good? It just sorta set in the pipe and there is no residue on the area or even a wax thing on it...What do ya think? I cant figure out how to put a pic on here, but mom can send one thru her email if someone can help us???
Thanks!

There should be a wax ring with the plastic dohickie. Look in the base of the toilet a see if the wax ring is stuck to the bottom of the toilet instead of remaining stuck to the floor. The box stores have a replacement same as what you have but with the wax. They are cheap.

There is also a waxless ring replacement that is grey, looks like wax ring and is direct replacement. Sort of like a very heavy duty foam rubber. Works great if floor has little too much spring in it as foam rubber adjusts to slight movements. Wax doesnt.

Like HermitJohn mentioned, I've switched to the foam ring instead of the wax ring for that very reason. Never will I go back. It's been roughly 6 years now, and the toilet hasn't leaked. With the old wax rings, I'd get a few months at best before it would start leaking.

If you cut down on the wigglin' you do whilst on the throne, your seal will last longer. I have never had a wax ring fail in 40 years. Did you...tighten the brass bolts holding the pottie to the mounting flange...?was there even a mounting flange?

Doesn't help that the toilet is an American Standard. The base isn't flat, so lots of interesting theatrics with shimming it and afixing it to the floor securely. Then there's the motion of the floorboards themselves. It's not much, but it made sure that in a few months the wax ring was worked down and leaking.

Like I said though, switching to the foam ring cured the problem. It's been in place for a number of years, with narry a problem.
