Freezer lid

I have to move a small chest type freezer.
I have to move it thru a narrow door way.
The freezer will just fit thru, however it would give a couple inches of maneuvering room if I take the lid off - due to the hinges that on the back side.
Anyone done this - remove the hinges with the lid and then reattaching same?
Any problems re attaching the hinges and the lid?
Doesn't look like it would be a problem if the lid is open and thereby reducing the tention on the springs within the hinge housing.

This sounds logical as far as safety is concerned, but I have never tried to do the same. I fail to see where removing the lid would be necessary, normally the lid is the same size as the width of the freezer, is yours not?

I have done it a number of times,

have some one hold the lid up to relive the tension of the springs in the hinges, before removing. and undo in the open position.

IN re attaching:
hold the lid in the open position and start the screws,
and tighten them but not so tight the hinge can not slide, then close the lid and final tighten.
(some times to readjust one may need to a very thin shim (1/16" or so) on the back side), As not to compress the gasket to much then remove the shim after tightening, (heavy paper box like a cereal box will work nicely)

The lid is tha same size, but the hinges stick out further in the back.
The lid is not the issue it is the hinges.
