Cub Cadet... what happened to them?

At one time, Cubby was a pretty decent little tractor/mower to have around the farm. You could do fifty acres of yard, plow the garden, and still take the locals on a hayride at the end of the day, and the old tractor would just keep on going (if maintained)!

The little 1042 I bought last year seems to be plagued with little things, including the reason for the following question...

The housing that holds the blade shaft: Is there a bearing on this shaft anywhere? If so, where?!?! I hit a stump, it happens on occasion especially during draught when the ground contracts and squeezes rocks and such higher to the surface, and I found the nut, blade, and a washer w/ a shoulder that fits inside another washer (in top top section of the housing), lying on the ground afterwards. I didn't find any bearing though... am I to assume there are none, and this assy. just slip back together and the nut, blade, and washer holds the assy. in place?

If this isn't as clear as mud...

You should have gotten a parts diagram with the new mower that shows an exploded view of the piece.

In one word, MTD. They have built them to make a profit, hold the price down and sell at all the box stores etc. Not near the quality they used to be.

Sorry,

Bob

MTD = Making Trash Daily

I have a "Troybilt" tiller (actually made by MTD), and this company flat-out sucks. It's criminal, I tell ya, with the junk they're selling. Anyone else notice that Troybilt mowers are becoming the riff-raff mowers at places like Wal-Mart? Kinda' sad.

Well... I guess if I'm complaining anyway:

I have chains on this 1042 lawn mower and was hoping I could find/build a small cultivator to attach to it. Anyone have any such luck/experience with this, as bending over with a hoe and a broken back just doesn't seem to work very well?
