Rope winch question

I'm interested in building a portable winch to pull my 200' fish seine and don't know what I can use for the drum. It will use a horizontal shaft gas engine mounted on a platform that I can anchor to the ground. I've seen winches that are activated by wrapping a rope around a drum a couple times and when you want it to pull you pull the rope tight on the drum and when you let go it stops pulling.

Any ideas on what to use for the drum and how to fasten it to the output shaft?

small rim like a go cart wheel uses and then use the cart hub to fasten it on to the shaft,

or possibly off a old lawn tractor, you could jsut use the entire transmission and lock up the differential or lock one wheel solid and use the other side, then you would have speeds a neutral and reverses,

it is called a capstan winch

Thanks for the links guys.

I should have mentioned that at the start of the pull I would be about 200' from the winch. I looked at ATV winches but couldn't find one that could be activated from that far away. Then I looked at garage door openers but some anchor points are 150' from the electric.

The pics do help me get a better idea of what I need. I had considered a kart rim but thought it was too small.

I think you will need a lot of gear reduction to get the speed of the engine shaft down to a safe and manageable rate.

I assume with a net you need to pull in a lot of rope, have you considered using a disk drum with a peeler, also known as a cheek hauler? These look like two blades from a disk harrow, you need the dished kind, mounted close together on one axle with their rounded faces together. The rope is passed around about half or three quarters of a turn and when the strain comes on the rope is pulled deeper into the 'Vee' and so does not slip, a small piece of curved steel rod is mounted in a position to that it 'peels' the rope out on the slack side and allows it to drop into a box or barrel, whatever.

I'll be pulling at least 200' at the start of each pull but only a few wraps will be on the drum at any time.

Is there a special kind of rope needed? The rope will be wet.

The farmer down the road was using a homemade puller to lift a 100# weight to drive a sandpoint well. He had a tractor blocked up for power and the drum mounted on the axle under a 20' tripod. Well....somehow the rope got wrapped wrong and he couldn't stop it. The weight shot up to the top of the tripod and kept going. Everyone ran.

I looked at cart wheels and it looks like they will work.
