Sounds like your problem is most likely in the switching valve mechanism. The valve under the truck switches the lines and also switches the electrical connection for the sending unit. Gas gauges on GM vehicles work by the sending unit being a variable resistor to ground. If the circuit goes open, infinite ohms, it goes to full or past full. If the circuit goes grounded or 0 ohms it goes to empty.
