Refusal to start is either spark, fuel, lack of compression, or bad timing. The first 2 are pretty easy to check at home so I would look there first. Were there any preceding symptoms? Usualy the first thing to do in this situation is to change the fuel filter, being that a clogged filter is a common problem, and that it is cheap and easy to replace.

Why did you change the coil? Are you not getting spark? If so, get the ignition module tested and when you replace it (the orig. or a new one) make sure you get the proper thermal grease for the back -NOT- dielectric grease.

Does the fuel pump run for a couple of seconds when you first turn on the key? If it doesn't somethings wrong. Never had an Exploder but my Ranger had an inertia switch and a fuel pump relay that could go bad. I think the Exploder does too. Check the owners manual for the location of the inertia switch and hit the reset button. It cuts off power to the fuel pump in case of an accident.

you have a host of things that could wrong before the coil in wiring and relays and fuses, including an override i have been told that wont aloow spark if the fuel punp is ot working properly [though i have not figured out how such could happen, but some engineer probably did] this makes for a frustration level so high blood pressure gauges tend to give a error code themselves for days [ok so we had a 92 exploder that died an electrical death and was traded off on an 98 expedition].... if you have not already pick up a chilton manual for rangers, exploders and mountaineers [basically the same vehicles, minor differences] manual 26668 covers 1991-1999 and is worth the $20 to keep the headaches lower on an electrical problem.

turn key on - do you hear both the relay for the fuel pump and the fuel pump as well? listen with the hood open, there are several relays all generally in one location, about an inch and a half square, when the key is switched on the relay will click and turn the fuel pump on, and will click after the fuel pump shuts off if it is working properly...
Check fuse box [under dash] and distribution box [black box under the hood]

getting AAA was the best thing we ever did, as it pays for hauling the rig to mechanic garage within 250 miles, [though now we have towing on our insurance so we are covered twice so to speak] it helps not to tow those rigs with automatics by getting a roll deck to haul them [though when working for the tow yard i was told i could drag mine no more than 30 miles and stay under 15 MPH and not do damage to the tranny] .... in case you get a bandaid on the rig and it quits on you and you need to get it some place.

You seem tramatized by the whole Ford thing yet you purchase another.

Hey.

How many miles on the vehicle?

If it hasn't been tuned for a long time, replace the cap and rotor and give it a try. If it's been a while, plugs should be replaced also.

Replace the coil to distributor wire. NAPA sells the wire seperately for about $7 if you don't want to buy the whole wire set. This wire tends to burn out on this era of Ford vehicle. If coil wire is bad, plug wires will be weak and should be replaced.

Ignition module is another possibility.

Ignition switch is a possibility also. These are relatively long lived, so make it a long shot.

Check fuses as a long shot.

Well...I'm not sure which one of you to thank for the advice. I think my DH tried all of the suggestions and nothing worked. Today I was leaving for church and there he was standing beside my Explorer with a big grin and said he has no idea what helped, but it started right up. He hadn't worked on it for a few days because nothing was helping. My bad muffler never sounded so good
