Think I got a good deal

Wandered past the Home Depot rental section the other night and they had a table full of used tools for sale. Echo chainsaws caught my eye but only because I've never really seen one used. They seem to hold up alright but I didn't buy one. At the back of the table was a Ridgid 12R ratch pipe threader, with 6 dies. Looks like new, and when i asked why they were selling it the reply was, "We've had it two years and rented it twice" "We need to make room" Now a 12R doesn't take room to display, but this particular store is in trouble for sales so i imagine they need a short term boost in total sales. Who cares, I bought the threader and 6 dies for $350 CND (that's around $290-310 USD). I've seen them on Ebay as cheap or cheaper but worried they might be counterfeit or have too much in shipping and handling.

HD rental.

If you can pick up a Makita 6401 chainsaw in good sahpe for under 250. It is a bargain. Great chainsaw . Plus you can get a new piston and cylinder and bump a 4.8 horsepower saw to a 6.3 Hp for 200. so under 500 in a 79 cc saw. german made they are.

Sounds like a good find for the farm. I have a junk set of pipe threading tools that I do use on rare occasion, good to have when you need it. The reason that the set was rented only a few time was IMO due to the fact that since PVC has become available most people do not know how to use the threading equipment.

My mom and dad went into a pawn shop years ago and dad saw a Rigid threader and dies. The price was so low he actually started shaking as he took them up to pay for them (and didn't dicker at all which is unheard of).
They've been a valuable part of the tool box for over 40 years and still work excellent.

Good buy!

I install oil tanks so they'll get the work. I have a 65R threader but it's bulky and slow, and needs new dies.

I have the 12R as well - mine came used with 3 dies, bench vice and large cutter - from an apprentice pipefitter who decided he didn't want to be a pipefitter. I think I've used the threader once - although I've used the cutter and vice many times. I didn't pay much for it, so I just keep it around "just in case"

The threader and dies are also quite common at industrial auctions.

Sounds like a very good deal.
Home Depot rental section does this pretty regular, I always stop in to see what's there.
Missed out on a walk behind trencher, $800 bucks by thinking about it for 15 min, then went back to find it sold. $3500 machine.
Man I could use it now.

Rental Section

Thanks for the heads up, I didn't even know HD rented anything other than trucks.

I have begun to check their bargain bin of cut-off lumber when I go in. Items are 50¢ to $2 each. The only things I have purchased so far are sheet goods. Paneling, MDF, chipboard, Melamine, etc., most were $1 per.
