David brown pto

I have a problem with my DB 880 pto. It is working fine but makes a loud sound like gears running together. When in 1000rpm. The pto is makes no noise.

Hmmm well it is gears running together but obviously its running louder than normal. Are the hytran levels up? It could be running dry. If the oil levels are fine you'd have to wonder about chipped teeth or something like that on the 540 gear. Did you change the hydraulic pump recently? If so you know it's not a huge task to split off the rear housing. I'd be tempted to have a look before something fails taking good parts with it.

Splitting the rearend

When you say split the rear end, do you mean take the cover off he pto? Or open the whole rear end? If I open the rear end is it difficult to put back together? I was told the hydraulic pump makes putting it together difficult.

you can check out the gears and oil flow tube by taking the third point off the tractor. then with the engine off rotate the pto and check for meshing on the gears . there is a tube from the hydraulic pump that feeds lube too this component, if its off you can get noise but most likly a bering or worn teeth.

First I would pull Hydraulic Oil filter and see if it is full of peasoup green water/oil/ice. Contaminated oil/filter will not flow and deliver oil to rest of components. It usually shows up when freezing temperatures come. It may be more serious, but I would start there before I took any components apart.
Oftentimes a clean new oil& filter will put a tractor right without further mechanical repairs...good luck

Rob it was probably me that told you to be careful realigning the gears on the rear housing, you simply turn the PTO by hand until there's a satisfying click as it get's in place. Not difficult but it is essential. Oil levels are the first thing to check and its a good time of year to do an oil change too if it is cloudy; but you can tell that from the dip stick. The filtre is right on the bottom of the tranny/rear end, in a pan, so you have to drain off all the oil first. Looks a bit like a car air cleaner filter once the pan is off.

Ok so i'm a little confused...is the pto making a noise or not? does the noise occur when the pto is in neutral? in 550 rpm? in 1000 rpm? my best guess. the 1000 rpm gear has one or more broken teeth on it. as mentioned before taking off the top link plate will open the pto gearbox for inspection.

I took it to mean it made noise in 540, (to be honest who uses the 1000 rpm on a 45 hp tractor?) another thought is maybe the engaging handle is slipping on the shaft.

540 pto

the 540 pto is the one that grinds. Mostly when there is torque on it. Very little noise is made when not running an implement. I accidently put it in 1000 rpm when bailing this fall. I thought it was cured. Until I realised the bailer was going a little fast. I'll open her up this week I guess.
