Used metal

I have bought some used corrugated metal panels that came off a old turkey farm roof. They are the right size to have no joints in our roof. We bought them for interior design but are wondering how hard it would be to seal it for our roof. Looking for opinions, they were taken down good. No big dents or gashes, just the nail holes. I have osb sheathing that they would go on. Want to try it but worried about sealing the roof. Thanks

What a great score! If you are going to put it down over osb just use the old nail holes and one inch screws, the ones with the rubber seals designed for metal roofing. Just run them down tight in the original nail holes and wallah... they are sealed! I might go ahead and put a layer of tar paper down like you would for a shingle roof but basically you should have a water tight roof with out it.

Are the holes in the bottom of the ribs or up on the ribs? I would use screws. Try to position sheets the same as they were. Yes, use tar paper, start at the bottom, overlap each coarse, and work up....James

Thanks guys. I was thinking the same things. I already have the osb and 30 lb felt down and ready to be covered. I was just wanting some encouragement from others. Haha. I thought I could maybe put some silicone caulk around any hole that seems too big. Thanks again.

To seal those nail holes, try Henry 209. It is a bitumastic sealant that stays malleable such that it moves with expansion of the metal. I bought a case lot at $4 per 10 oz tube. Far better than anything else I have used.

Do not use tar paper ! You use this stuff called "grace".

then the metal goes right over that with no purlins. I like your project. Dont put ketchup on that steak. Take off the tar paper and buy some grace. Its pricey but it will make that roof last a lifetime. They make a cheaper no name brand. It also allows the metal to expand and contract.

Make sure you vent that roof properly with baffles and ridge vents...
