Changing seasons.

Well, this morning I took my bowfishing gear out of the back of the Ranger. Fly fishing stuff is still back there though. With luck, in a few weeks, I can do a little squirrel hunting, head up north for ruffed grouse or a few miles west for pheasant. Once we get a good hard freeze, I can pursue rabbit too. Ice fishing season can't be too far behind. Life is good.
Anybody else ready to spend time in the woods?

Never stopped since the woods in the summer is a peacefull place to spend time. Just not harvesting any game.
But spring fiddle heads, morels, and ramps are very tastey. Summer black berries and elder berrys make great pies jam and wine if you so desire. late summer/early fall is the time find more shroons like the culiflower, chicken and others.
The deer in the woods know me personally and allow me to get very close to them as I talk to them. I know where the squirrels are collecting the different nuts and where they are going for the corn.

Is good to go fishing a time or two but never totaly leave the woods.

I'm always in the woods, cuz I live there... lol. My most anticipated hunt is for moose this fall. I shouldn't have too much trouble, they love hanging out behind the barn, but that isn't really hunting, is it??

I also look forward to mule deer, white-tail, elk, bear, and trapping season.

What is holding me back is that harvest is going on right now, and I need to finish up with that first. It is hard sitting on the combine and looking into the woods and seeing the elk trails, the bear scat, the moose rubs and wallows.

Moose opens October 14th. Here is hoping combining is over by then...

I forgot one of my favorite past-times... Calling coyotes.

farmerDale, are the 'yotes a serious problem around you? I had a city gal tell me one time that I shouldn't hunt and kill the poor, little coyotes. When I asked why, she told me because they are an endangered species. We had a talk. She wasn't anti-hunting, just misinformed.

They are a fairly serious issue, yes. They are though, hunted enough around here to be truly wild, not semi-domesticated like in some more urban areas. But they still eat chicken and lamb...

Having one come in full throttle looking clear through you for the dying rabbit that is not there is a thrilling style of hunting.

I also love to call coyotes to the gun. Wish I had the extra money, DNR just announced wolf hunts in Michigan this fall from Nov 15 thru Dec 30th.
1200 tags for 100.00 each for residents and 500.00 for non residents.

if your fairly certain you can get a wolf the price of the fur would just about offset the cost of you 100 dollar tag , i think our tag is the same

we had a lot of guys in trapping class this year who wanted to go after wolf.

Deer camp is in the UPPER. Home is in troll country for a while yet.

All the local deer except fawns and a few of last years yearlings have changed to their darker winter fur and the bucks horns are now clean bone.
