It has been a down year in the coon belt. IA, MN, WI. The numbers aren't there like they have been in the past, not sure what has changed the amounts. Average is around $11.00 - $15.00 here. Coyotes I hear is bringing in $40.00 each though!

I guess I'm not much of a trapper. I set out a live catch trap to try to catch a squirrel so I can use him to train a new squirrel dog. I baited it with cracked walnuts yesterday. This morning I checked the trap and all the bait was ate up and the trap door still open. So I readjusted the door and rebaited it. Right after dark I went to check it incase I had a live squirrel in it, as I didn't want it to set out in the cold night all night long if there was a squirrel in it. I first noticed the door had been sprung but I couldn't see anything. Then upon closer look I noticed I had a little bird inside. All the bait was gone too, hulls and all. So I can't figure out what's making off with the bait and just how did the little bird manage to set the trap off!

Birds push down with their feet to help them take flight so even a little bird might exert enough force to set the trap off.

Well I caught a big old field rat the next day. Sure was a purty critter for a rat. Nothing near as nasty as the rats you see in houses and barns.
