Need Some Cross Bow Advice

Have a youngster wanting a cross bow and I don't really know anything about them. Draw weight needed for deer and hog hunting is the first question I can think of. What else do you need to go with one? We will be looking at the cheaper end price wise.

Ok Wildlife Department to check on the crossbow requirements.

Haven't tried a crossbow yet, I'm more of a stick and string type of a guy.

its a Investment, dont skimp.
I would avoid the recurve type.
the longer the Draw the more energy=knock down and range.
the reverse limbs are pricy but IMO worth it.
Check out the scopids

http://scorpyd.com/store100.html

you may be able to find a nice one used.

many states limit fps so be sure you know what you need.

Don't be fooled into thinking a crossbow is like a gun nor bow.

its different from both.

IMO get the kid one of the Upgradable Bow packages if cash is of issue. I forget the name but Bass pro was pushing them, when the kids reach increases you can bring it back in and get a longer limb. it costs but not as much as a new bow.

crossbows have there place but leave many cold. mostly misconceptions.
my 70 lb draw bow will travel nearly 2-3 times the distance my 150 crossbow will.
with more knock down to boot.

now if your in a area they regularly sneak up on you at a close range, crossbows are nice. not to much movement, just rise it and shoot. or if you cant draw back at least 50lbs and know your range another plus for a crossbow.though regardless of what ever you need to always be able to figure your range. just more consistent with the Crossbow.

If your youngster is planning on deer hunting with the crossbow, then it has to be at least 100 lb. draw weight.

I'm gonna try to have one bought by next years deer season. So I'm glad you asked this question as I'd like advice too.

I would go with at least 150 - 175 pound Draw, this is one thing about Crossbows you can use Cocking Devices,I have Crank on mine.

Plus like mentioned I wouldn't skimp on price.

Don't know if it helps or not but I have a Barnett my wife got my for my birthday. 150 lb draw weight came with a 3 pin red dot, quiver three bolts from Dick's for $299. I really like it but can't speak for how long it will last only had it 6 months.

His buddies have cross bows, some of them are spoiled beyond necessary. He started on mom with the they only cost 150 bucks whine and she bought into it more then I realized she had.

I've found a jaguar cross bow on sportsman guide and amazon for 150 that has good reviews, a Horten trac 150 and a Barnett jackal that are about 50 and 100 dollars higher. Guess I need to do some pawn shopping but since this is the first year crossbows are legal here probably not much luck to be had there.

I would of told him to get a job if he wanted one and left it at that.

I bought an X Force 300 about two months ago. It cost $215. 160 lbs draw. a 4x32 scope, 3 bolts...it's camo. and awesome. I was hitting small bull's eye repeatedly at 25 yds. after five minutes. Got mine at Buckeye Outdoors in Hebron Ohio.

Just get him a gift card for what you can afford and he can string a few together or work for the rest. Don't get yourself strapped over christmas. Just my 2 cents.

Ended up with a Barnett Panzer V. Looks to be an alright starter crossbow. Maybe he will get some time tomorrow to shoot it.
