Got to get back into bowhunting!

These last few years seems every time I find myself a good hotspot, it wont be long and I'm invaded with a lot of bowhunters. This year everywhere I've gone I keep running into other hunters and they keep pulling out their cell phones and Ipods and showing me pictures of big deer they've gotten out of the area while bowhunting. Then they tell me how many bucks they've killed all together. Maybe no wonder I can't find a decent buck to shoot at.

I haven't been serious about bowhunting in several years. I use to hunt with a compound and might fill all my tags in just a couple of weeks. But back then I would shoot does, spikes, and just about any kind of deer that would come by first. I guess I got kind of bored with it. I gave my compound to my nephew and said I'm just gonna hunt with a recurve only. Well since then I haven't hardly bowhunted at all. So I'm thinking of getting me another compound and start bowhunting again. Only this time I'm gonna be a little more selective on what I kill.

Hopefully I can beat some of those other bowhunters to the big bucks in the area and I can show them my pictures!

Oh! I did manage to shoot a doe yesterday evening while out gun hunting. Shot her just about 15 minutes before legal shooting time ended. She ran over the hill as if she wasn't hurt too bad. I knew I hit her but the way she ran up and over the ridge, I thought it might be a while before she'd lay down and die. So I decided to wait till this morning to look for her. I found her about 25 yards from where I shot her. I guess she came back off the hill sometime after dark and died in route to where ever she was going the first time.

Good on the doe. I am seeing lots of deer here on my place. I posted a pic of the deer I killed this year. First one in years. Not that Icould not kill one, just did not care too much about it but have been seeing some big bucks so went this year and killed a nice buck before 7:00 AM. I enjoyed getting one more than I thought. Wish I had held out for a bigger one. I know I have them here. I did bow hunt long ago and killed a couple and enjoyed it. Did not hunt with ML this year, but is a good time to get a good one. I would like to get a crossbow and try to get one of the big ones. Good luck!

I've been pondering the ideal of hunting with a crossbow too. I'm just wondering if it would be easier to cock a crossbow then it is to pull back a compound?

Not used one, but I know they have a crank system and other methods for cocking.

I don't know if they are harder to cock back, but I know there are several options for doing so on a crossbow.

One thing about it once it is drawn back you don't have to worry about when to draw it back with a deer coming in or getting tired holding it back waiting for a good shot.

Found a NIB Shakespeare recurve at an estate sale for a whole $2.00. Guess I'll have to start practicing before next season.

I have Crank on my Crossbow but they are heavier and you only get one shot if you miss.

Compound is Better but I wish I could still draw a Recurve.

Some are desirable, like a Neshotah or Super Neshotah, the rest of the line are hit or miss. Because of that, I'll play with it and learn more about archery. I did some target shooting, with my youngest son, a few years ago at a Youth Sportsman Ministry run by our church. That program was fun. The kids learned to safely shoot BB guns, archery, fishing and camping.

I shoot shotguns, muzzle leaders, compound bows and a crossbow. It's all good. I like that bow season starts prerut and goes through rut into post rut. Seems like gun season is always just after the rut in Ohio. I always scour flea markets and yard sales looking for a recurve but have never found one that is either in great condition, a minimum of 40 lbs. or priced reasonably.
