Unhappy Let Several Meals Get Away

Was fishing last night about Midnight caught the Biggest Soft Shell Turtle I ever have.Get it on the bank, try to pull its head out where I could cut it off.He would draw it in where there was no way.

Laid him up by my fishing stuff for a bit on his Back, decided to take him to the Pickup deal with him latter.Well he had his Head out,I tried getting ahold of it,he slipped lose I forgot how fast they can move.He took off knocked my Chair over, scattered my Fishing Stuff and made it to the Lake

Oh well I did catch 6 Channel Cats.

Yea I had 5 Softshells in the Boat one time one of my Boys got bit on the Backside

You know I haven't heard a Bullfrog all year.I'm thinking Otters have cleaned them out around here.Had a Guy seen Otter kill a 15 pound Flathead,Bad thing is I was helping in the stocking of Otters back in the '80's was told there probably wouldn't be any Trapping for them because numbers weren't expected to get that many.

Oh my gosh Rockpile, we must be twins!

I just got back from a 4day/3night campout down on the river near my home. The first evening I got in my bellytube and floated across the river to where some logjam's were. I baited up with stinkbait and lobed it out about 12 feet in front of me in front of the logjam and before long I started getting a nibble. Then it took the bait and ran and I jerked and thought I had a giant cat. I had a rope tied to my bellytube and a brush gripper on the other end, which I had gripped onto a treelimb sticking up out of the water. It was a good thing I did cause I had one of the strongest fights I've ever had on a fishing pole. When it finally came up to the surface, I realized I had a big, huge softback turtle. This thing was about the size of a large pizza pan.

I don't know how long it took me to get that thing close to me. Everytime I'd manage to get it back up to the top and toward me, it would take off again and strip some more line off my zebco 33 reel. After several attempts I finally got it close enough to me that I could lean way over and cut the line. I was scared that thing was going to wrap the fishing line around my legs and take off again. That would have been painful.

I didn't catch a whole lot of fish, but I had a good time camping. My two youngest kids and I could just live at the river all summer long. Overall I ended up with two cats (one waying around 5 pounds), 4 small mouth bass, and 2 or 3 nice little perches to eat on.

In couple days I'm going to get some Greenies and try to catch some Flatheads.

I can't imaging trying to get a Big Turtle in with a Zebco 33 I was using much Heavier with 30# Test Line and I had plenty of fight.

So what's a Greenie?

This morning I drove back to the river and done some perch jerkin/catfishing. I had caught a bottle full of grasshoppers last night and used them for bait this morning. When I got to the river I realized I had taken my fishing poles out at the house except for one little ultralight rod&reel. So that's what I used to fish with. I came home with 8 nice sized perches on my stringer. I think I had hooked about 3 nice sized cats but I never got them up to the surface before my line would snap. That's what I get for being so forgetful!

I also caught a few small mouth bass but since there's a 9 to 12 inch slot limit, I never caught one big enough to keep. Anything under 9 inches is too small to eat anyway.
