Oh my gosh Rockpile, we must be twins!
I just got back from a 4day/3night campout down on the river near my home. The first evening I got in my bellytube and floated across the river to where some logjam's were. I baited up with stinkbait and lobed it out about 12 feet in front of me in front of the logjam and before long I started getting a nibble. Then it took the bait and ran and I jerked and thought I had a giant cat. I had a rope tied to my bellytube and a brush gripper on the other end, which I had gripped onto a treelimb sticking up out of the water. It was a good thing I did cause I had one of the strongest fights I've ever had on a fishing pole. When it finally came up to the surface, I realized I had a big, huge softback turtle. This thing was about the size of a large pizza pan.
I don't know how long it took me to get that thing close to me. Everytime I'd manage to get it back up to the top and toward me, it would take off again and strip some more line off my zebco 33 reel. After several attempts I finally got it close enough to me that I could lean way over and cut the line. I was scared that thing was going to wrap the fishing line around my legs and take off again. That would have been painful.
I didn't catch a whole lot of fish, but I had a good time camping. My two youngest kids and I could just live at the river all summer long. Overall I ended up with two cats (one waying around 5 pounds), 4 small mouth bass, and 2 or 3 nice little perches to eat on.
