dane caught a coon

got a dane (Olive) from the shelter about 2 months ago to be a running buddy for my greyhoundX. so far i haven't been able to put her on any game (rabbits in a crash so are the predators now). coming home from a run up a nearby canyon, she saw a large male coon (18#) running through some wheat stubble. she ran it down but didn't seem to know what to do, so after a minute i sent in the greyX (Sonic) to show her how. long story short her enthusiasm & inexperience caused her to get in the greyX's way and he took a beating getting the job done.
this & the way she tries to pull my arm out of the socket when she sees a cat, it gives me hope that she will be a kill dog on coyotes my greyX can stop.

Great !

so glad your dane got a new lease on life from the shelter with you. Dog work is simply the best way to connect. Dont know if there is anything to be done for your arm socket, as a "game" dog is always gonna be that way, and I doubt you'd want it any other. I really enjoyed the last stuff you did with Sonic. Don't think I'd want to be btwn Sonic and any game, but I think with a few examples Olive will learn good from Sonic.

Meanwhile good luck

Great Danes normally have quite a low prey drive, which makes most of them not a very desirable hunting dog.
My 5 year old Dane, Savage, despite his name, is generally very gentle with humans and animals alike. I've seen him in a few fights with another male dog, but if he sees a deer, for example, he will chase it a few yards, then lose interest.
A few years ago I began taking him grouse hunting with me. Surprisingly, he will retrieve a shot grouse, but I think he's doing it more to get my attention than anything super instinctual (though I could be wrong). Doesn't even want to eat them, even though I raise him on a raw diet (mostly chicken).
On the other hand, he pretty much ignores my neighbor's free ranging chickens, and just wants to play with the baby and adult goats. When he hears wolves howling near our place he might bark at the sound a bit, then go back to being his normal lazy self.
Your Olive seems much more promising than Savage, but don't be disappointed if she never really "gets" it like your greyhound (whose sight-hunting skills were bred right into him from the beginning til today).
Just my opinion.

The real test will come when she gets bit up by a coon. A really good coon dog is 10 times better after they get chewed up a little.

you'd be surprised how many dogs really want to hunt if given a chance. i know there are dogs that just don't want to hunt, but most do, even if it is just the moles in the yard. Olive will always get to go on the hunts even if she is just a big goofball.

I couldn't agree more, thats why i am planning on taking her by herself a few times.
