300 WM vs. 7mm

I just watched a guy drop a moose from 900+ yrds w/ a 7mm

The Best of the West show about a scope system on Outdoor channel ...

I have 7mm and 300 WM and they were saying the 300 is way off for long range stuff compared to 7mm both with factory loads of the same weight ...

what say ye?

IMO in would be unethical, just for grins I compared the ballistics of the 175gr Grand slam in the 7mm and the 180gr grand slam of the 300 mag, they were almost identical at 500 yards for retained energy at 1513FP for the 300 and 1500 for the 7mm.

In the first place, who can't get closer than 900 yards to a swamp donkey?

That 7mm 175 gr will have 840 ft.lb. energy at 900 yards. I like more energy than that to shoot deer up close. And a 10 mph breeze will drift the bullet 64 inches. Finding range is easy now with lasers, but doping the wind is still an art, and an imprecise one. Slop one into that bull's guts because a puff of wind caught you, and he is hurt and sad.

No one should be shooting game at that distance, but the two cartridges are pretty equal for all practical uses

The 300 MAY have a slight advantage if you use the heaviest available bullets, but at normal shooting distances it's personal preference

One advantage of the 7 Mag is it will give the same performance with LESS recoil

Hey,
We are comparing 7mm mag yes the ballistic coefficent is higher for the .284 bullet which when you are more than 400 yards starts to retain energy much more.
Waisting a shot at a moose at 900 yds, why? I thought the bigger problem was havng them at 25 yards!

Less recoil with the 175 grain bullet? I don't think so.

after watching the whole show, it seemed to just be one long advertisement for a Huskemaw 5-20 Rifle Scope and custom Turret system ...

Less recoil than a 300 Mag with comparable bullet weights
You have to figure the weight of the powder too, and the 7 Mag is more efficient

7 MAg would win hands down for trajectory

I faved my 20" .338 WIN Mag for real hunting, maybe 325 yd pt blnk rng for moose and caribou. No way I'd take that shot its for hot doggers, grandstanders and show offs.

Guys were sniping moose with .50 BMG. at a mile, but that aint hunting.

and where do WE as hunters draw the line?

I ain't willing to walk a mile+ to get to game I took out with some ungodly round... after watching those elitist hunting zebra, gazelle, cape buffalo etc in africa, dropping record meat that would last us over a YEAR, only to have it eaten to bones within 30 minutes to an hour by natural "predators", no THANKS ....

The 300 has won more thousand yard matches than the 7.

The 300 delivers more down range energy than the 7.

There are many more .308 bullets on the market than .284.

If you want to hunt big nasties up close, the 300 is a MUCH better cartridge than the 7.

More bullet choices. More accuracy. More scalability. More knock-down.

The 300, hands down.

Given equally capable shooters, at REASONABLE distances the 7 and the 300 are so close in performance it's still personal preference

>300H&H has won more 1000yd matches...I have a .300H&H Improved which tosses a 175gr MK at 3300fps and is scary accurate(not with me behind the stock, you're safe after 500yds)....But as Bearfoot said,at ethical hunting ranges,it comes down to personal preference. If I were to go for a bigger long distance caliber,I would go with a .338,either Winchester or Lapua..all though a Win is fine cheaper to reload.

I like the 300 H&H. Shoot one regularly (pre-64 Model 70 Winchester).

Lots of other cartridges that do their job well, like a 6mm PPC.

Same problem, though...go buy a box of ammo at WalMart. For a regular "hunter", I want a caliber that's fairly easily found.

Lastly, I've watched a lot of people shoot. Most folks are mediocre, at best. The 300 WM gives you a tiny bit more edge on a not-quite-perfect shot.

Me, i need all the help I can get....
