Thanks for the advice Guys!

I posted a "What gun?" question and with all your wonderful information we went with a .270 and a .22 and guess what, I got my first ever animal yesterday

It might not have been the deer I was after but a rabbit isnt too bad to start with lol.

Shooting a rabbit with a .270 is kinda overkill isn't it?

Just kiddin'.

Congrats on your first kill.

(wince) Actually it was VERY overkill lol But having three quarters of a rabbit is better than no rabbit at all

And the dog and cats ate the front legs that werent in a usable state so nothing went to waste.

The rabbit must have had a death wish, I walked to within 50 ft before I saw it in the bushes, had to put my ear protectors on, find it in the scope, adjust my stance (VERY new to this) and then shoot. It never moved the entire time all that lot was going on LOL

Having it for dinner tonight, and am TRYING to post a picture of mighty hunter but cant seem to figure out how to go about it *sigh*

Never mind, next trip will be after feral pigs so wish me luck

Rabbits are like that.
Next time just pull up and shoot, most aimals don't wait around for you to go thru all that.

except for ear protection....loosing a few kilocycles of hearing is not worth a rabbit....

Talking

When your stalking, use the foam hearing protection. Stick them in the ears when you start and take them out when you finish. You can hear well enough with them for stalking. Not bad for stand hunting either if you are not counting on your sence of hearing to locate game.

Congrats on the fresh meat. I my self would use the 22 and dress the rabbit with a knife if needed.

Well, the first animal I killed with my refinished 8mm Mauser was a ground squirrel, so who am I to point fingers. Popped him just as I was walking back from the shooting range after initial sight-in.

Usually I dont like wild rabbit but have only had English and Irish wild rabbit and this one tasted NOTHING like them!?!

It was really REALLY good, only a hint of the bitter taste I was use to and LOTS of sweet meatiness! I cooked it for about 4 hours in a slow oven with onions and carrots and a can of cream of mushroom soup and enough stock to make it sloppy.............

WOW, am Deff. going to be looking for more of those darlins

Must say, was all out of proportion proud of myself bringing it home but what the hey, its a great feeling!

Next time you get yourself a couple more rabbits, try Rabbit Hausenpfeffer.(spelling?) I use to just love eating it. I need to find a good recipe. The recipe I had was in a cookbook that I have lost. So I haven't had an Haus in a long while.

Found a recipe for Hoss. in the rabbit section of this forum, plus lots of other lovely ways to cook em!

How does one go about hunting rabbits in Florida? Is it a case of good eyesight or just luck?

The one I got was just plain luck lol

The most productive way is with Beagles and a shotgun.
Otherwise it's pretty much luck to see one and get a good shot
