First fisher of trapping season

Marten and Fisher season came in yesterday, season only lasts about 8 days, and this morning I already had a nice large male in a conibear. I put out six sets on Wolf Cairn Moor, my 100 acre croft, but I don't trap or snare eslewhere, so what is here is all at which I have a shot at catching. Still, it is nice to have some fur in the traps.

I caught the fisher in a 220 conibear and he was yet very much alive when I arrived on the scene. This gave me a chance to use my new Heritage Arms bird's head revolver (a .22), with a 4 3/4" barrel. Admittedly the shot was neither long nor tricky, but it sure was easier to dispatch the fisher with the .22 than with a blunt object. I skinned him out claws and all, to have tanned later by US FOXX, in Duluth.

That's great, Haggis. We don't have those here in MO, do you always catch them in conibears or do you get them in steel traps as well? What do you use for bait/lure if you do get them in steel? Sorry, I'm a very curious person and love to learn new things! lol

Always in a conibear, and bait the set with a wee piece of fried pork anointed with vinilla extract and anise oil.

Thanks, Haggis! The man uses vanilla extract and anise oil for baiting coons.

There are very few varmints, two-legged or four-legged, that will not take a keen interest in the smell of either vanilla extract or anise oil, even black bear and deer will nose around an area wherein they smell these scents.
