I think I've had it

Today was the first day of shotgun deer season. My buddy called at 3:00 am and said he hurt his knee and couldn't make it. My son said he was not feeling well and decided to sleep in. All alone I head into the woods out back where we have been tripping over deer for weeks but today it was nothing, nada, zip. Did not see anything, did not hear anything. Just squirrels. Lots of squirrels. 50 - 60 squirrels in a 4 hour stretch of still hunting. I quit counting in the mid twenties. Enough squirrel to average the take from a medium size deer. No more deer for me. I'm filling my freezer with rodents.

You're not frustrated until you've taken a dozen squirrels with a .30-06. Head shots are the key... Before you start feeling bad for the squirrels, you should remember that deer use squirrels as spies to scout for hunters. As such, they're fair game.

I had one sitting 6 ft away on a log with me for so long I was going to offer him a granola bar.

I suggest you start packing a zip-lock bag and some tweezers with your gear. You'll need them to pick up the pieces when you finally snap.

Range: 6 feet. Load: 00 buckshot. Result: squirrel confetti

Thats the absolute truth.Spook some squirrels and let them start that "danger chatter"and see how long before you see a deerBluejays and crows do it too.And a few(very few)times in my life, it backfired on the deer, the deer spooks the squirrel to chatter, and I look in that direction

My neighbors beagle was out running loose in the woods with the weirdest bay in the world freaking out all the crows. Just not a good day.

Dont feel bad, that's how my whole fall season has been going. I've had several hunters invite their way on to my area where I've been hunting for the last few years and now you can't find a deer to save your life. My fault tho, I helped a cuz get his first deer last year and this year he invites all his friends over. Gonna have to have a talk with the cuz and tell him next year I'm posting all the land and he'll have to have my permission to invite anyone over.

Monday afternoon, we got a deer apiece and when we were tracking the blood trail, I heard a squirrel bark and looked up in time to see the deer he had warned bounding into the woods across the pasture from where we were. Didn't matter, we had just filled our landowner tags and got two more Tuesday morning. I may have to start squirrel hunting because they alert the deer for us as well.
