My biggest redfish

Been spending some time down at rollover pass. The fishing there is excellent this time of year. The reds are running and the flounder will follow shortly. Thought I would share a pic of my first "successful" trip. I caught 2 Friday. The first one was 36 inches long and the second was 38 inches long. The pic is of the 38 incher.

Is he good to eat? Did he fight hard? It's a nice looking fish.

I once caught some black drum in the ocean. Reeling in a 70 pounder was like reeling in a 70 pound sack of feed. No fight. But the bluefish fought great.

Looks like somebody needs a trash can back behind you.

Thank you.
It is a member of the drum family actually named red drum. They are good eating. The bigger ones are less flavorful though. Mine ended up tasting like and having the texture of chicken.

Their great fighters. They dont jump or anything but their known for their long drag screaming runs. a true anglers dream.

As far as the trash I totally agree. There are trash cans every 50 feet the entire length of the pass on both sides and you still have to wade through ankle deep trash. My wife's work is sponsoring a clean up of the area soon that I will be participating in and promoting. Sadly the clean up wont change how people are.

On second look, that is a trash can behind you, between the wood posts. Aren't people disgusting?

Very nice fish. Great job.

I agree with you on the texture of the big ones. My Dad came down for a visit when I lived in Aransas Pass, and we went out to the channel on Mustang Island. He caught a 42 inch red and wanted to release it. I talked him into tagging the fish and we took it home, cut it up into steaks, and put them on the smoker. We tried to eat it and it was like cutting into a chicken breast. I think if I caught another big one I would grind it up and make fish patties.

Have fun with those reds and flounders.

Congradulations on the fine catch. When's the fish fry?

That's the way it is around here. You go to the dam when the fish are spawning and there will be dead fish, beer and pop cans, jumbled up fishing line, and no telling what else laying around everywhere. People will catch a 5 gallon bucket full of shad to use for bait, use about a dozen or so, then empty the rest of the big bucket full on the ground to rot away. Just can't figure some people out!
