barrel heat

When I run 4-5 shells in about 30 seconds through my 12 ga. the barrel gets too hot to hold.

I've always used a double so I'm wondering if this is normal?

Yes,heat and friction gotta go somewhere...the temp rise will also depend on thickness of barrel...I read a story about dove shooting in Argentina and they switched out shotguns every 1/2hr...

I was thinking that it got so hot so fast because the gun is cheap.

It gets hot because of the powder youre burning.
Expensive steel heats up too

Seems like the thinner the barrel the faster it heats up.
I have an older Mini-14 that will get too hot to touch after 3 or 4 rounds, but my newer .223s with thicker walled barrels take a lot more rounds to get that hot.
Most shotguns have relatively thin steel on the barrel.

Supposed to hit the target with the first shot.............keeps the barrel cooler
(Sorry I couldn't resist, I pratice shoot and release also)'
I do have most of the shotguns plugged for 3 shot max, mostly anything after that is expensive noise.
