Cheap AR Practice

I put 200 rounds through my AR last night and it cost me a little over $7.00.

My Spikes Tactical .22 conversion arrived. Slicker than chit, pretty reliable and it wasn't tuned nor broken in yet.

Biggest issue is that I only have two 27 round mags for it, and it takes longer to load than shoot. Even in my 1:7 Colt LE6920 barrel, which is over stabilized for .22, hitting a 3 inch steel plate at 25meters is no issue. Keeping rounds on a 2/3rds IDPA silhouette "head" is also very easy. Good part was I could do some CQB drills without screwing up my armor plate targets and having it cost a lot.

It's plenty accurate for bunnies/squirrels at 25 yards or so, even with a dot sight and poor twist rate. It did gunk up my upper a bit, but nothing that couldn't be cleaned in 15 minutes.

With the price of ammo rising, you AR owners might want to look into one.

Chuck

It'll gunk up your bore real fast and real bad too, if you don't clean the barrel very carefully after every shooting session or you will run a high risk of blowing your barrel if you pull the conversion off and run .223 through.

It wasn't that bad, and a quick easy soloution is to just run about 5 .223 rounds through afterwards.

We picked up some Milsurp M261 conversions for about $80 a pop some years back, and just gt a few Black Dog 27 round mags to get away from the mag inserts.
Cheap fun, and I don't feel guilty about blowing thru our stash .

Where did you get your conversion?

LOL, A guy online had listed them on a few AR15 website based Equipment Exchange forums. HE must have had hundreds of them.Wish I would have bought a LOT of them, esp at that price.
Of course back then, we were still getting 1,000 rounds of Wolf for under $100, so it didn't seem THAT great a deal at the time!

Haven't seen many since, and certainly not at that price.
