Garcia[Mitchell] used to be good. Shimano seems to have taken over alot of the market. Figure what you want and go shop the sports authority, etc for a rod/reel combo. Ugly Stick makes good rods. Shakespear makes good stuff too.

Freshwater for trout, panfish & bass go w/ mono...stick w/ a name brand

Muskie/pike may need a heavier braid or at least a wire leader [carefully look inside a pike's mouth & you will see why]

Can't help w/ salt

For freshwater fish under 10 lb. I use nothing but Zebco 33 with monofilament. The best all around outfit I have found, but usually have to buy a half dozen a year. I like to take a kid fishing and give him/her the rod at the end of the day.

the combo i use is just over 100 bucks, it's the BPS bionic blade and shimano spirex reel.
with 8lbs trilene. I've used it for everything from panfish, lmb, smb and Cats.

if it has to be under 100 bucks i still have a 25 year old zebco that i use too.
don't do any saltwater fishing.

i have tried the braided stuff but didn't care for it....was very strong which was part of the problem....when i got snagged i've pulled cannoes with it and have had to use a stick to help snap it. My leather man was down the river with other cannoe

probably any combo will function well. The advances in fishing equipment technology in the last 20 or 30 years has been fantastic. The stuff I used to fish with as a kid was like being a cave dweller compared to what is out now. I won a Shakespear rod and reel combo a couple of years ago. Probably went in the $40-50 range if I bought it and it works great for everyday fishing. It has caught tons of trout, bass, northern pike, panfish, bullhead, and carp over 20lbs. I can't complain. You spend just under $100 for any combo and I don't think you will be disappointed regardless of make.

1. Favourite factory produced fishing rod under $100 would be St. Croix Premier series.

2. Favourite line is Tuff Line superbraid

3. I don't saltwater fish, except the rare time I've done that when on vacation, but I do fish muskies with a heavy action reel Shimano or Penn you probably won't go wrong choosing between those two brands a model suited for your particular fish preference

Shakespeare polls are good. About $20 and up. I use an ultralite.

Zebco 33s are good, but if you compare them to the Zebco 33s built around twelve years ago, you see that they sompromised and "went cheap" after a while...
