Taurus .38 spc+P 2"
Anyone familiar with this revolver?
I was out with my Good Son a week ago and he was looking to buy some sort of small revolver, he had a stainless Ruger in mind and in hand until I talked him into saving a couple hundred dollars by going with the blued Taurus. He has been carrying a Glock for a while but it is bulky, no real safety, no exposed hammer, and (me ever asking if there is a round in the chamber), so he is laying it aside (the Glock) in favor of the Taurus exposed hammer revolver.

The Glock internal Safety is less likely to fail then having an external hammer which can catch on things. Only way a revolver could be safer then the Glock is Single Action only in a fully enclosed holster. I am a big fan of revolvers, and I prefer 1911s over Glocks, but the Glock internal safety is very well designed.

I'm familiar with it.
Nothin' fancy, but a good, solid shooter. I'd feel comfortable with one as a pimary carry piece.
It'll bark when told to, and is every bit as accurate as the handler.
Some of them newer .38 special +P loads pack a wallop, too.

I'd recommend he fondles and shoots both to see which is better for him. Ruger is a step up in design and workmanship IMO, Taurus are lighter and cheaper - and swamp man is right on. Both are fine, trustworthy weapons.
Rugers are 100% made in USA and have a great company behind them. Also check out thier new LCR revolver, a polymer frame .38 sp designed specificaly for concealed carry.
There is a product called the Saf-t-blok for Glocks. It's a plastic insert that fits in behind the trigger to prevent AD yet pops out instantly to allow the gun to be fired.

Thanks for the information, insight, and experience.
On a side note, Daughter #4 had her car and garage broken into last night; her and 5 other families in her wee village of Eveleth, all had a few things stolen, but all had more valuable objects too large to be carried off on a moments notice (I have a 2002 Harley WideGlide and a 2006 Harley Heritage Softtail Classic stored in daughter's garage). My SIL and I were talking that maybe it's time he and her took the Carry Permit class, in the meantime both my Good Son and I have offered them a self-defense piece to keep handy. SIL is of a large size, and was once a bouncer, but he says he had rather borrow a self-defense piece from my Good Son or me and ,,,,,, well, he has a short fuse.
My Good Son lives just 4 miles from Daughter #4 and has had his house broken into and has been twice assaulted in the small hamlet of Virginia, Minnesota, needless to say he is on his toes these days.

Haggis, sorry to hear about the break-ins. Ya know, I would be happy to store both of your hawgs in my garage. When summer comes you can take one home and leave the other one here onaccounta you can't ride both at the same time. I would take very good care of them.

Thanks CF, and thanks for the offer to store my scooters; I'm quite sure both bikes would be in good hands in your garage. Truth is I haven't ridden the 2002 WideGlide since I bought the new Softtail in 2006.

Getting your carry permit is always a good idea. When I go on vacation to Florida, I'll have my Florida concealed carry permit so there will be no issue with me having my little bundle of bang with me at all times.
Here in Ohio, we aren't allowed to shoot someone over 'property'. If someone was stealing something from my unattached garage, i'm not allowed to shoot them. Stupid laws here for sure ...... If they break in to my occupied structure (house), that is a different story all together !!
Yes ...do get the concealed carry permit. Even if you don'y carry concealed often, you will be glad you can carry when you need to .....
It's like having a spare tire in your car ... you don't plan on having a flat ......

I too am sorry about your breakins and the problems being had. Hope those perps get thier butts kicked and / or thrown in jail soon!
Would also encourage the concealed carry permits.

It is odd that my children are having the break-ins, both live in very "nice" neighborhoods; Ah well, it rains on the just and the unjost, or so it is written.
Daughter #4 and my SIL came over and I sent him home with a 12 ga Remington 870, a box of shells, and a lock for it. I offered him a 1911 .45 auto, but he and she said they were more comfortable with the long gun, at least until they get a permit to carry, or rather, until they have had the training course for the permit to carry.

Besides an 870, with pepper rounds and bird shot,, I keep a flare gun with a capsium pepper round in it,,, The rounds were developer for crowd controll and to thwart bear attacks,,, Although less than lethal,,, They can be fired from a shotgun and under 20' the pepper granuals will embed in the skin,,,,, That way I can take out my frustrations by kicking the perp till the police come.

I have a taurus 38 2" barrel and love it. Just ordered 400 rounds last week for target and then another 600 protection. Hoping it comes in soon.
It's a nice light gun for women like me.
I agree with swampman, it's not fancy but does the job.
Picked up some pepper spray too and a case to put the ammo in at Cabela's.

Funny, I had a bunch of carry guns, and the one
I'd carry most was my little charter-arms "undercover" quite like the tarus.
Kept shot capsules in it for the first round, snake or grouse, then usually 150 SWC's handloaded as hot as I could shoot them, but the "cowboy" loads were the most fun to shoot, and my wife really enjoyed them, altho she enjoyed her 44 with cowboy loads more.
The snub .38 got carried by me, the majority of times.
Have fun. Try handloading, you can custom your ammo the way you want for about half to quarter of the cost, and shot lots more.
Good Luck

taurus
I have a taurus ultralight. Tookit out of box and first shot was a bullseye..how bout that? Then about every 6th shot was a misfire. Sent if off to the company for repair..a month late rI got it back. Haven't had a chance to check it out yet, but seems to me a poor sign to come out of the box and need repairs....

I like .38 special snubbies! I had a taurus I bought right and liked until I gave it to a pastor friend of mine... I had a smith 642 I carried a lot over the year or two I had it. I sold it because it had the dreaded "Lock" on it and they started to make them without. I replaced it with a small 9mm instead. I will someday pick up another air weight smith -eventually
I like the ultralight smith and its a great pocket CCW and I hit well with it. I have the 640 SS in 357 that I won't part with but it is heavy enough to need a decent holster for. The air weight hammer less was great to toss in the pocket for aq quick trip to the wood burner/store etc...
The taurus .38's are fine and the ones I have shot have been ok.
