Wind: The weather is rotten for deer hunting.
Gun season started for us on Saturday and nothing is stirring around due to the cold wind. Morning temperatures around 34 degrees, no frost, and a continuous breeze all morning and day long. You got to walk around kicken em up to get em moving and not having much luck doing that.
My 10 year old daughter has been going with me. She wants to kill her first deer. This morning we kicked up a small doe and it ran out there about 50 yards in some brush and stopped. I could see it clear enough to make a kill but I was wanting her to nail the coffin lid on. By the time she could make out where it was it took off running again. That was about 10 a.m. this morning and we never did see another deer all day.
Yesterday we tried setting all morning and about froze our tail ends off. The wind just seemed to keep blowing right through us. We hopped in the jeep to warm up some and while we were setting there we had a small spike buck run right by us. It was a gettin it, so somebody must have spooked it our way. By the time we got bailed out of the jeep to try and shoot it, it was long gone.
The last few years I've been trying to pass the doe's and small bucks up. But since my daughter wants her first deer, all deer are game this year. Must be why the weather is so rotten this year.

I took my grand-daughter who's nine on the youth hunt weekend, then regular season opened this past Saturday. So far, she's passed up shots at 7 doe and 1 spike. I don't know, she really loves to hunt, has shot her rifle and can hit with it, but she won't pull the trigger on a deer. I reckon that's okay though, but when I go after some meat I probably won't see a thing. Maybe I'll take her along for luck.

We had lousy weather here (Minnesota) during rifle season, too. We usually take 5 deer between three of us. This year the only deer we got was a small nubbin buck which I shot on the 8th afternoon of our 9 day season.
Looks like hubby is going to have to hunt during bow season this year.

Cold windy on Saturday here in Alabama. I got into the stand at 5am , deer were grazeing greenfield by 6am. Picked a nice doe , but a shot right behind the shoulder down she went. Carried back and dressed she weight 93 lbs hanging. Went back out at 3pm same stand, deer came out around 430pm picked a buck out with a malformed rack put him on the ground. Hanging weight 110lbs.
Sunday , took another stand down the hollower next to a deer trail, while my hunting buddy took the same stand I had on Saturday. He took a nice doe around 345pm hanging weight 86 lbs, I took another buck spike hanging weight 115 lbs.
Went out this afternoon after work , same stand as Saturday and took another doe hanging weight 90lbs. Today it was raining and windy chilly but not cold. Looks like the season is going to be a good one for the deep freezer

Gregg, must be nice to live in a area where there's what something like a deer a day limit? It probably could be rainning cats and dogs and you would still see deer out. It's not like that up here in Oklahoma. Although deer numbers are rising, we still don't have enough to have such a limit as some of the extreme southern states. Six is our yearly limit.

It has also been a good season here in NC. I have seen 21 deer and taken 6 plus 1 coyote.

It is nice to have so many deer to hunt. But with so many crops in the summer can go from looking good to nothing in a matter of days. The most I have taken in a season is 16. I think in the last 4 yrs I have taken around 50 deer. When I get my freezer full , I give them to the jail to help feed the con's. My son is handicapped and I take him some as well as other kids on their first deer hunt. It is fun to see the smile on their face after they kill their first deer. I also coon hunt and take kids hunting , their is never a dull time around my house, lol

Yep, I like doing things like that with kids. Introducing them to the great outdoors. I have a friend who is living and working somewhere down there in Alabama. Around Newyears he has his family drive down and spend a week with him and he and his son do some deer hunting. They bag 2 or 3 each in just one week. They have jerky, cheesestix, pepperonie stix, etc. like that made out of them and have them shipped back here to Oklahoma.

R.H.,
We've had a blessed season in the S.E. corner this year. Son got his first deer-a doe (special hunt). I've gotten two black powder and two gun. My gun buck is the largest buck I've ever gotten. I'm a big guy (5'10" 265lb with a 38" waist) and the rack will fit on either side of me. Eight points but wide and good mass. Mom/Dad/DW surprised me as I was caping and said "save the cape, that one is going on the wall". I've never had any desire to spend the money mounting one but if that is to be my Christmas present, I can think of none better....Got it to the taxidermist and NEVER even put a tape measure on it LOL..As soon as I get done butchering this morning- son, daughter and I are headed back to camp.
Hope your season picks up and your youngun gets that shot......

I am tired of processing meat. Saw 11 does this AM and could have taken any one of them but let them walk. If it is not raining in the morning I will hunt a different area.
