Here we go again........

Well, It was just a normal Sat. morning, having my coffee, and reading the paper, when the phone rang.
It was a friend of mine that has come upon some health issues lately, long story short, he asked me to adopt his T/C .50 cal Hawken, (and all the shooting stuff that goes with it).

Couldn't say no, so it now has joined several brothers/ sisters that have recently found their way into gun safe.

I guess that quite a few people have figured out that when the time to part with one of their "toys" that I'm a sucker.

I also have a buy back program, if some one gets over what ever troubles they are having, they can come back and I will sell them back their toy for the same price.......If not they have a good home.

Another trip to the range is in order shortly.

good to hear they have a good home with a buy back program all to often you hear of sombody addopting then turning around and are making proffit.

i have known some people i wish would have called me before they sold thier guns but at the time i don't think they wanted anyone to know how hard up they were. it's a shame cause often it seems like they get taken a bit on price.

GCP, I hear ya, I had put the word out a lots of years ago, and so far quite a few people have taken me up on my offer, and of course several people didn't , for the reasons you just stated.
I don't take in every one that comes along, just what I would want, and at a fair price, so hence, they come and go.
I can't remember ever making any profit, I give too much stuff away to be a good business man, it seems that the extra stuff and the good will over comes this though.
Interesting enough, I had given a .45cal T/C Hawken to my daughter, and a .54 Lyman's Plains rifle to my SIL (with the stuff). Now this one is the same as the 50 cal T/C I shoot the most.
I'm still trying to get my friend to get out hunting with me, has a "shoot from the vehicle permit", although I can't imagion shooting BP from the window of the pick up.

I don't know how many times I have gotten ammo, or an old gun, because people will call and say "I know you shoot and reload, do you want these/this/whatever, I don't want it/them around the house".
So it works out.
I also pass along info on any thing I not intrested in, to friends that I know are intrested.
Lots of history in some of those old guns.

hunter- it seems we have a bit bit in common...

if I buy somethin at a deal price because thats all someone else would give and they "need" the money I have and will sell back... now if I am payin fair price because they want another toy or beer money I may or may not sell back to them if that makes sense.

I have a rep and have been given, bought cheap and given away and sold decent also. I would rather give a good guy or gal a gun they will use and enjoy than sell one for a profit... call me odd but its true. Very few non spiritual things bless me as much as seeing someone enjoy a hobby because I gave them a start in it...

Good for you!

Ya talk of "passing on" a deal or so- heck on that thread on the cast boolits forum just recently where the guy mentioned GIVING 10mm brass away- I asked and he shipped me several hundred, I don't have a 10 mm yet but my roommate- a retired old guy in the middle of a separation/divorce does- I paid the shipping and gave em to him it all comes back and I know I'll get decent deals etc because of stuff like that...

well come ta think of it I did get a BIG melter set up given to me for the wheel weights n stuff- I was gonna make one and one fell right into my lap instead its cool and I can not weight (pun intended ) to melt down the bulk stuff this summer

Tallpaul, I hear ya, what goes around, comes around.
But I have been accused of being real good at spending other peoples money.

(1) Story, and speaking of T/C .50 cal. Muzzle Loaders.
Good friend, didn't have a muzzle loader, but had a permit for a special season, was coming with us.
He was a truck driver and I swear that he worked 25 hours a day, so hadn't purchased a gun yet.
At the last minute, his wife shows up (banker, actually my banker) and hands me a blank check and says, "here just go out and get what ever he needs". I couldn't believe it!
I told her that I just couldn't do that, (wanted to, but couldn't).
So she called him..........

Anyway, about 5 minutes later he shows up, took the check, and we went shopping.
So, in about 4 hours, driving time included, and about $1000 bucks later he was ready to go.
I still can't believe it to this day.

(2) Story, another guy I worked with, his wife called one day and asked what kind of rifle I thought her husband needed for deer hunting. As I am particle to Ruger's, we set him up with a scoped .Ruger 270 Model 77.

He worked in an office with a bunch of engineers, and before you know it, our whole engineering department was very well armed.
His wife, still to this day says it's all my fault! (Well, she asked!)

I also gave away some brass on this forum, gave it a good home, and would have given away some weird ammo, but couldn't get past the shipping, too much hassle.

Yep, along those lines. I to have given quite a few guns away to family members. Some I wish now I still had.....oh well. I guess going out and buying something you need is something we all deal with. I hope i made a difference in their lives and made it worth my sacrifice. That's what matters most eh?

Yes, you are correct, that's what it's all about.

I've often wondered what would happen to my guns when I bite the dust. I only have daughters and not sure if any of them would be interested to keep them when the time comes. None of my nephews are real big into hunting or shooting since they have grown up. I hate to see them sold to strangers. Have thought just have them buried with me and keep one loaded incase someone try's to rob my grave! Don't think they will allow that anymore. Not sure what's gonna happen to them.

Invite the daughters to shoot with you. I think you'd be surprised to find that they'll like it. I plan on taking my 13yr old daughter through hunter safety, if only to make her livable for a future husband who may be a hunter or shooter.
