Our ML deer season starts tomorrow, so I've been doing a little scouting.
I rode to the back of one of the cotton fields today, and in the corner by the woods, I found a rub on a tree. It was near a trail that goes into the woods so I thought I'd walk in a ways and see if there was any more sign around.
My houndog, Blue is ALWAYS with me if I'm not actually hunting, and he was interested in the rub, but went into the woods in a different spot.
I got about 20 yds into the woods and heard Blue sound off, which means he's jumped a deer. Within about a minute I heard the deer coming straight towards me. The woods are VERY thick there and visibility is more in feet than in yards.
The deer ran to with about 10 feet of me before he saw me, and was so freaked out that when he tried to put on the brakes, he slipped in the leaves and fell right on his side.
He was scrambling, trying to get back up, and I was about to fall down laughing at him! He was a nice little 6 pointer, and if my wife or I see him again from tomorrow until Jan 1st, he's in BIG trouble.
Blue was about 10 seconds behind him , and ran him a few more minutes before giving up.
Ive seen some signs of a couple of other bucks on the property, and there are LOTS of does so with any luck there will be fresh venison tenderloins for supper this weekend.
And if not Ive got 2 lambs in the cooler as back up!! LOL
