Unhappy hunting trip gone bad

was out yesterday morning with a hunting buddy and our bird dog named Hope
it was pouring down rain in the thumb of michigan untill about 10:00 am
we started about 9:00 hunting grouse and woodcock
we did ok in the rain other than the electronic beep collar got wet and stopped working
we kept hunting and hope took off on a bird and got lost
wat an empty feeling that was calling fo her and no response
yep there I was walking in the woods, blowing a wistle and hollering HOPE :baby04:
we looked for her untill 10:00 pm and gave up the search
Hope had her Id tag on her collar with our phone number
got a call at 8:00 this morning from a family 1.5 miles south of were we were hunting
Hope showed up there at 11:30 pm scratching on their back door wanting in
picked her up this morning and she's home safe now

My grandpa had working dogs (for cattle and hogs). When one got lost, he'd put his jacket or a shirt where the truck had been parked, and come back the next day. Most of the time, the dogs would backtrack their trails, and wait on top of the jacket.

Lost my setter once. Looked until 11pm. That's a nasty feeling. Tried the jacket thing without any luck. Oldest daughter found her next afternoon. Dog wouldn't make eye contact with me for almost a week. She knew she was bad.

A fellar gave me a Mountain Cur dog once. Said he had to get rid of it as he was getting married and will be moving in with his wife who lives in a apartment building. He said it was a purty good squirrel dog. Well I kept it around the house on a chain for about 2 weeks, and then I let it run free in the yard to get some exercise. It ran around there for a few minutes sniffing around on everything and then it started heading North. At first I thought he was just gonna go over by the dirtroad and sniff around. But he crossed the road and under the fence and just kept running north. I kept watching him and then kind of realized he had intentions of just keep on heading north. So I jumped in the truck and tried to beat him around to the next county road, in hopes of catching him. I ended up going 3 county roads over before I finally caught him.

I then chainned him up at the house for a whole month and tried it again. Once again he headed north and this time I never could find him. I've never seen him sense. I'm glad he didn't cost me anything.

That will save more dogs lives than most people think. That old hunting coat with your scent on it will keep him there rather than not leaving it and he trys to find you crossing a highway.
