Pocket gopher trapping problem

I've started to trap the pocket gophers on my dikes and for some reason they keep plugging the traps.

I use clutch traps by opening a hole and shoving the trap in as far as possible. Normally I catch 4-5 gophers for every trap they fill up with dirt but this year they are plugging 10 traps for every one I catch. The traps aren't snapped and are set on a hair trigger with the trigger tipped towards the jaw as usual.

I'll set the trap and when I come back the gopher has pushed enough soil to refill the hole all the way to the top.
