What's happened to the Mexican fishermen?

Several years ago when the mexicans were moving heavily into this area I got to noticing them at the fishing hole. At first they were mainly just onlookers. I can remember some of them wrapping fishing line that they had found somewhere on the bank onto a aluminum can. Then they would throw the line out as far as they could and then wound it up on the can when retrieving. Soon they figured out where to buy them rod and reels and next thing you knew they were everywhere at the fishing hole. Didn't bother me so long as they left me enough space to wiggle into.

Last year I got to noticing a few of those Asians from Cambodia or whereever they come from, at the fishing hole. The shad were running and they were catching as many of them as they could and putting them on stringers and taking home. Not sure what they done with them. Well this year the asian people are everywhere at the fishing hole. But there ain't no mexicans running around!

Do Mexicans and Asians not get along very well?

Around here they seem to fit in well together. The Asians are catching and keeping Skipjack, (one guy told me how he fixes it, gonna try it myself). The Mexicans seem partial to Drum (which I like myself). It's a big river, and they are all very courteous and everybody get's along.

Be very careful around that bunch. Asians like Mexicans. They think they taste like chicken...

fishing rules & regulations?

The question that I would like to ask is "do these folks have a fishing licence & do they abide by the rules?"

Most of the asians are here legit and could by a licence or at least not fear deportation if the warden came along

but at least here it is no scocial security number no fishing liceince this is supposidly to crack down people who owe child support.

that and the mexicans are to busy working these days.

Not sure about the latino's but would bet the Asians do. They are, at least the ones I have been around, extremely respectful, polite and courteous. Real decent folks.

I always figured it was work related. Most of the mexicans around these parts were struggling and sent home every spare cent they had. Work was spotty and inconsistent. An afternoon of fishing meant a little extra money to send home. Now days there is more work than hands to do it. More work means less time fishing as they can make enough money working that extra couple of hours to BUY supper and still have more money to send home.
Interesting you mention the fishing equipment....I noticed that also and just figured they couldn't afford the extra expense of rod/reel. I guess it's a traditional way of fishing for them. Amazingly accurate with a string and soda can (although saw two using plastic soda bottles).
I don't thank it's a cultural issue between Asian and Mexican.

Well today we went fishing again at the same hole and I did find one family of mexicans there. A man with his wife and son. But the Asian people are everywhere. They catch on purty fast. They were slaying the sandbass as fast as any of us old timers. And Galump has a point there, they do all seem to be very courteous and polite. They laugh and joke with you a little, something I have seen very little of the Mexican. But I haven't really seen or had any bad experience with the Mexican fishermen either. They just seem to keep to theirselves and smile very little. Kind of like me!(half-breed injun)
