Shouldn't Have Gotten This Bird

Went over on Goverment Land this morning.Setting up on this hill.Started calling. One gobbled in front of me and a closer one to the left of me.Well I moved just a little more to the left.

Called a little more.Well the one in front of me was gobbling good. One to the left just every so often.Well they was liking agressive calling and thats what I gave them.

The one in front was getting closer and I hear a Hen with him.

I'm setting there calling with my Gun laying in my lap.Look to my right, there he was all fanned out and almost past me.I lay the call down, raise the Gun up and turn. The Hen spots me and starts down the hill. The Tom is still strutting. All I'm thinking is how pretty his Tail Feathers are.Get a bead,he spots me,sticks his Head out.Thats all she wrote.Once the smoke cleared Bird down.

big rockpile, way to go on the meaty tom. I called in 2 toms and 5 hens for my buddy on saturday, and he shot the one that came to the decoys. First shot put the tom flying, and I'm thinking ( OH NO ) but he made the second shot count, and knocked him out of the sky. I told him that he needs to wait next time till the tom puts his neck out. He was one happy hunter and bought plenty of cold ones at the registration tavern.

I shouldn't have gotten him because everything was in his favor.By having to put my Call down, bring my Gun up and to turn all the way around. Its just next to impossible to do with a Turkey.

But like my BIL has said I'm the luckiest Hunter he has ever seen, that I get away with stuff that is just not done

Nice going, big rock. You are making me jealous. I have never hunted turkey with a smokepole, but even with a regular shotgun it is some of the most exciting hunting I have ever done. I have shot a few with a rifle while deer hunting in Texas, but it is not the same as calling one up.
