First Muzzle Loader Deer

Got her just before dark yesterday i saw some walk through the orchard
so i went around through the tall grass at edge of the swamp they hung out in the grassie area between the hedge of over grown brush at the back of the orchard and the woods around the pond

I saw them from about 100 yards but wanted to get closer witht the MZLDR
then they slipped into the woods i went down and found the fresh tracks in the snow looked down the trail into the woods just then the last of the 4 doe
turned back and looked at me about 25 -30 yards

that was the end for her

so there she is MZLDR deer number 1
standing deer number 4

when i was gutting her i pulled the bullet from by the liver what started as a 410 gr flat nose buffalo bullet .50 cal is now as big as a quarter with ony the very back of the bullet even recognisable as beeing a bullet

distance traveled after shot a few feet she went down imedialtly tried to get up couldent and colapsed i like it when they fall on the spot saves all the time of looking

i was very suprized how quiet the shot seemed almost sounded like a cap gun
i presume this is in part because i was shooting into some faily dence woods and we have a few inches of snow i think the snow cutts echoe

i think i am done now for the year our cwd season ends sunday
the reason for MZLDR for me was that the 16 acers i have to hunt are to close to town so they made it MZLDR only along with the public hunting land it ajoins

Very nice! I never have killed a deer with my muzzy. I may have to get more serious about that.

Good job! With some practice that 100 yd shot is very doable with the right loads

Thanks and i want to work up to that 100 yard shot but i need to put somthing besides the factory irons on it they are not that great and the shots are low light with poor contrast the snow helps a lot but when i pulled up on that first deer at 100 it was hard to get lined up

also i only got sighted in at 25 yards this year the gun started breaking open on the 10th shot there was a burr on the catch keeping it from locking up fully but that is all fixed now .it is a NEF

i am at 90 gr 777 ffg i think i am going to work it up a bit to 100 and see how that does at the range for accuracy to 100 but now is not the time to sight in the morning is 4 degrees wind chill -15 not the coldest but not exactly sitting at the range for a few hours working up a load weather either .

i cut her up last night not the biggest deer but about 35 pounds of ground meat + tenderloins and back straps she has a lot of fat

What kind of gun? Rate of twist? 100 Grs of powder is a lot to put behind a Buffalo bullet unless you really LIKE recoil LOL. Maybe you could try something lighter and flatter shooting when the weather warms up

Congrats, good job. Did you have to "run up thru the smoke"?

I have one of those .50 cal barrels for my NEF, I forget the twist rate, but it was designed for minnie, maxis and sabots.
So far been using sabots, pydrodex, but haver not come up with a consistent load.

I use 110 gr ff in my TC Hawken , but with patched round ball, so far the best load for hunting.

Took a 9 point with it, knocked it down at 80 yds with a spine shot, then reloaded running down the hill.
Got it loaded up with second shot, but had dropped all my stuff on the trip.
Looking back up the hill was my gloves, hat, loading block, short starter, ram rod etc.
There would have been no 3rd shot.

Mind you I had practiced loading on the fly, in the dark(eyes closed) over and over, even loading on a 55gal drum on springs(like horse back), but in the heat of the moment, to get down there, dropped everything.

Its a wonder the white man ever won the west.

Congrats on the deer.
I have read a lot of good things about those NEF front stuffers and their slug guns. One other fellow told about the barrel lock problem he had with his too.
Check with these guys for some good loads for your NEF. I think It is M L Keith who thinks so highly of his.

I only use 80gr. of T 7 in my T/C Hawkins and it is a tack driver at 100 yards with a peep sight of course as my old eyes just don't work with buck horns any more. I don't have the fiber optic front sight but I have been told they work great with a peep sight.
85gr. T7 in my plains rifle is also accarite with an old Weaver K4 fixed 4 power scope. Fixed power scopes are cheap at yard sales, think I gave $5.00 for this one 8 years ago.

Do you know where to look up your particular deer in the Wisconsin DNR CWD system? Go to: http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/...WD/results.htm Enter the bar code for that specific deer. Check daily and you won't have to wait for the card to come back before knowing that it was positive or negative. If you enter your DNR number, you'll get a report on all CWD deer that you've registered.

The first two that I butchered last month were 159,815 and 153,392. Results on both were back in 14 days. (Don't know the number of the third one yet.) Feed those numbers in for the fun of it and then navigate from there to more specific figures.

The second of those two deer was shot with a muzzle-loader. Cousin's daughter and her husband attended a outdoors sports show. He won a rifle and she won a scope! This was the first deer with that combination and the bullet sure did a number on one of the hip sockets.

Thanks for the info on the cwd registration i will run my barcode in a few days and see if it is done

i like the huntsman it is a very good design there are 2 thinks i would like to change the ram rod and the sights

does anyone know of a better colapsable ram rod

as for the sights they are plastic with he little fiber tubes
like the fiber hate the plasic especialy since i broke the front sight wednesday
the little plastic loop that holds the fiber broke off so for now a little glue is holding the fibe untill i can get a new sight or have a red dot or scope mounted

the dnr has not gotten back to me about my question yet i think i may need to call again
heres the question
so bushnell makes a 1-4 power scope
we are alowed 1 power scoped durring wisconsin mzldr season
and as may power as we like durring gun season and in cwd zones
so my question was if i secure it at the 1 power setting durring mzldr season if i ever hunt that is that ok

my gues is no because that would they would claim it would be to easy to move it and move it back

it would be like if you had a shotgun that held 5 rounds and only put 3 in while duck hunting you may only have 3 in but thas not good enough

hence the pencil plug take 1 pencil unlike the test who cares if it is a number 2 hold it next to 2 shotguns shells end to end snap it off a little longer then remove barel nut/mag cap and drop in it fits in through the hole in the mag spring retaining clip on most put the nut/ mag cap back on

to remove - remove nut turn gun strait down shake a bit and it falls back out

and this is the best part you don't have to take the spring retaining clip off so there is no looking on the other side of the room for it and no third hand nessacary to recompress the sprin and put the clip back in

I don't think any type of scope is allowed in Wis. during ML season but a red dot is. Williams gun sight has different sights for just about any thing out there. Williamsgunsight.com

check with M L Keith at the site I gave you a link to above for a different ram rod. I think I remember him telling some one what to get to replace the stock one.

from the regs book
may not have telescopic sights (1 power or less are legal). Telescopic sights are legal to use on muzzleloaders during other firearm seasons

1 power means window glass but you get the benifit of the much better sight picture

thanks for the info

If a red dot sight is a laser, it would not be legal on ANYTHING while hunting in Wisconsin. That would include firearms, bows, and crossbows. The only exception is for those who hold a Class C visually handicapped permit. That's mentioned twice in the 2006 Wisconsin Deer Hunting Regulations; under Shining and Use of Devices. (Page 12 for those who have a copy.)

The "Red dot" sight isn't a laser, has a red dot on the optics, same as a cross hair, and are "0" power.
Use of a laser in WI is considered "shinning".
