Question Squirrel question

This may sound odd but I have noticed two very different types of squirrels that live on the farm. The smaller ones that I consider to be a normal squirrel and then there are these giant reddish colored ones that have bald or partially bald white faces.... what kind are they? I guess if I were to kill any for the table I would tend to go with the ones I grew up eating, the smaller gray ones.... has anyone ever eaten one of those big guys? It is large enough to make quite a meal.

Hi Paso-Did you get your TN Hunting guide yet? Hawkins Co is in 'Unit B' and the gun season opens Nov18-Nov26 and Dec16-Jan3. The bag limit is 2 antlered deer.

The 'giant' squirrels you are seeing are fox squirrels as others have pointed out. They usually like more open areas and hilltops in open areas. They also tend to come out and stay out later in the day than greys. The ones on my place tend to have a black top of head, white nose and bright rusty orange coat. They can have a lot of color variations including a nearly totally black version. TnTnTn
