Planting asparagus

Everything I have read about planting asparagus says to dig a trench, Why? Is it because most people grow large numbers and it is easier to dig a trench than individual holes or is there some benefit of the trench that I just don't get. I have 12 roots to plant and sure seems it would be easier to dig 12 holes than 12 to 18 feet of trench. Any thoughts.

Just dig a hole.I also don't see any reason to plant deeper than existing soil line like I have see recommended by some nurseries.

You dig the trench to lay the plant length-wise in the trench so the roots can expand out and not down. Kinda like planting sweet potatoes. You lay those on their side too instead of in a hole to allow the roots to grow out and make wonderful little baby sweet potatoes! Asparagus grows like a rizom underground. Out but not down. You get more from your plants that way.

The roots I have are not very big so I think I can lay them lengthwise in a hole just as easily,
