Getting Local Produce to Seniors

Hi all

I'm not sure if I am in the right area for this thread but was hoping maybe someone could point me in the right direction.

My mom lives with us and she is 82. She likes to go to the Senior Center for lunches and when I hear what she has been served it just makes me cringe. One of the schools in our area is now getting produce from a local grower and our hospital is also buying local with produce, meats, eggs, etc. I would LOVE to get something established for the seniors but don't know where to start.

I would very much appreciate any information I could get on getting this ball rolling. I just hate seeing what 'food' is getting served when it could be so much better. Thanks in advance!

Check with the Senior Center director as to whether they can accept and use locally grown produce.

where in SW co are you? i would guess that growers in junction, hotchkiss, paonia, delta, etc., would welcome the opportunity. but like the guy above said, the senior center folks have to approve it, have the budget, etc., and not have a contract with someone like sysco or another "food service" company.

Thanks Oneokie and imthedude

imthedude, I live in the four corners area, Dolores, Cortez. I will have to check out the senior center and ask around.
