Trees

Not fruit type trees. They would be in an orchard and not a graden.

My question is how close are non fruit/nut trees to or are they in your garden.

We have a row of mature caragana (Siberian Pea Shrub) along the east side of our garden, and a row of lilacs along the north side. They actually seem to help the garden retain moisture - the soil near the trees is always less dry than the soil on the other side of the garden. Maybe it's the shade? Or possibly the wind blocking? Anyhow, they don't seem to stunt the veggies at all, though the caraganas do drop a zillion little seeds that become a nuisance when they sprout and become yet another weed to deal with.

I'm wondering about tree roots also. Interesting about the shade factor. Most everything I read says sun. Most veggies say full sun. I had started seeing aritfical shade last year over a few gardens. I was told to plant my maters to have afternoon shade to lower the heat factor.

My small garden plot is surrounded by oak and pine trees. I'm actually planning to start cutting/thinning some of them as they are on the south side of my plot and shade almost the whole space in fall/winter. I have one medium size oak and 3 pines IN the garden. I'm trying to go around the oak and not cut it, but will probably be working on bringing the pines down in the next few days. They are right beside the electric service line coming into the house so I'm gonna have to take 'em down from the top. Joy. The roots from the trees are the real problem as they near 'bout kill me when I hit them with my front tine tiller!

Call the electric company. They are obligated by law to have 15' clearance each side of the line. They will trim and maybe clear cut and leave you the fire wood cut to length.

I hear you on the tiller. I have stumps everywhere.
