I am this year going into the production of shiitake, and oyster mushrooms. Is anyone else out there growing mushrooms?

I am planning on adding a small shed to the back of my garage this year to put some small logs in. Haven't raised mushrooms before though so I can't really be of much help right now.

Here are a few links to check out. DH & I have been talking about growing mushrooms also. We're in Hi Desert so not too sure how successful we'd be. Keeping humidity correct might be an issue. Good luck with your project!

I'm another who is interested in growing mushrooms. I am looking at several varieties; not just shiitake. I will be following this thread as I know we HTers have some shroom growers in these forums.

I got logs started last year of shiitaki, oysters and half a dozen other edible and medicinal types, but haven't had any production yet. I think I need to get a better handle on shade, temp's and moisture control.

I'd like to have a small commercial operation someday, but other projects come first (finishing the house!).

Lots of info on the internet. You need the correct types of wood for the different types of mushrooms. That is why I really did not get into shiitake, but oysters are not too picky. I do find cheap enough blocks on ebay once and a while to fill my shiitake needs.

Check around for workshops in your area. I went to the Field & Forest workshop, in Wisconsin, a few years ago. Good way to ask questions and learn from their mistakes. Good luck!

my partner and I started way to early, we have a large tub colinized so we are going to shock it with cold and then fruit it. It is shiitake I will be letting people know what happens to it, and how it does. Oak logs are the best but any hard wood will do. The big thing is you have to shock your logs, throw them in a pond in early spring and let them soak for a couple of days, then fruit them in in about 80 percent shade. It takes about 1 year for shiitakes to colinize the wood.
