Uncooperative Sunflowers

OK, so I planted about 10 Sunflowers in a location where they would be facing the back my house in the evening(which faces due east - expecting the sunflowers to face due West). So far 2 of 3 that have bloomed start the day facing due East - as expected - but the turn to face due North at the end of the day. They even turn to the left although the sun is to their right - as if to turn away from the Sun. What gives????????

You have a white house or a lot of glass windows? If so, they are reacting to a reflection of the sun rather than the sun itself.

No, yellow house and yes, some windows... But, wouldn't that attract them and not turn them away? The sun passes over them and off to the right, yet they ae turning left and stopping facing n/nw... Odd... I have one that is being good ;-)

You are in Maine, so the sun is still setting North of true West -- we are here in Portland, Oregon, too. This is considerably less noticeable farther South, but very visible here.

They are facing the sun -- go out at sunset one evening ans stand behind them, and you'll see.

Also check for an oblique reflection angle from the windows.

It is Maine, and we like to be different...

I think I figured it out... My house blocks the sun in the west in the evening. They probably are turned side ways so as to face the sunlight coming from around the side of my house.

You got that fancy summer person sunlight that bends around corners eh?

Sometimes I can't resist.

Is it real bright on that side, outside the shadow of your house?

LOL - Yeah, fairly big transition from shade to setting sun light. I don't know. Just throwing ideas around...
