The 50% off section of the nursery

I always go there first. As plants are costing so much these days (at least here), it feels great to get a plant that with a little care will grow just fine at a good price.
Yesterday I picked up a 5 gallon potted climbing rose. It had been cut back hard after blooming but was already sending out new leaves. By the end of the year it will be huge.
I have picked up some unusual and wonderful plants that way.

I buy almost everything off the clearance racks ... DH calls me The Plant Whisperer!

Our local Lowe's makes it very easy for me, as they cull everything that isn't actively blooming. I look for nice, healthy culls with buds ... won't be long 'til they're blooming again!

Rags- I've done that too. I will ask the checkout clerk if I can get a "discouraged" plant discount.

I was there yesterday. Ferns half off, bought 6. Some marigolds that were half dead but will come back into growth with a little tlc and some good soil, pansies that were still blooming, doomed to die in the heat but just might last until fall when potted and set under lights in the basement. And I am giving a mandevilla a chance to die in my care, one of the few plants I manage to kill pretty easily. And a couple geraniums and a petunia that were still quite beautiful and healthy. If I had more spare cash I would have bought more.

I think gardeners are the most optimistic people in the world. Where there's life, there's hope.
