What do you think about turning a bed of a old pick-up truck into a green house? How do I figure sq. ft. The size is 5'1/2 x 8' .Silly ?Is it worth even going into detail how this could be done?

Sounds like a good idea!

Length times Width

5.5 X 8 = 44 sq ft

My neighbor did that a few years ago and it worked well. He just built a fram from 2 x 2s and dropped it in the bed after he put dirt in, then stapled plastic on.

My son did something similar. He has two truck beds filled with sand and compost. He added a simple frame and has shade cloth that can be rolled over it when the sun is too hot (opposite to your needs). The gardens are doing great. He lives in the CA desert, and until this, has failed at any other type of gardening because of the heat and, an even bigger problem, the critters who devour anything that comes up green.
