Planting ginger root

I am going to plant some ginger root for my Farmer's Market Customers in my high tunnel. Any ideas where to get the mother roots?
Linda

I got mine in Walmart's veggie section. It was right next to the horseradish. Really Cheap per pound and sprouted up well. If ya can't find a good place to get it, at least ya now know this will work.

Look for them at the grocery store; look for ones with eyes. I started mine last fall and they started sprouting.

Then the rain came...they weren't in my normal garden spot and I forgot all about them. I just went and checked them; the roots are very spongy. I'll keep them and see what happpens.

Good luck!!!!

Thanks, I am going to pot some up this weekend. Supposed to plant them like potatoes with three eyes . Then hill them as they grow. I found directions in a 2008 Growing For Market newsletter. Plant 1 pound and get a 7 pound return. sell for $20 a pound You can also sell the leaves and stems. My kind of product LOL

Okay, here's a dumb question about growing ginger: How do you harvest the roots? Do you dig out a piece like a new potato, or do you have dig up the whole thing and save a piece to start a new plant?

You dig up the whole plant. In the north where I am you can not winter them over . They are tropical and do not like to be frozen. They take 10 months . So I am going to start them inside now then transplant the m to my hightunnel. The tunnel did not freeze until November so I should get some young tender roots to sell . Like I said , you can sell the whole plant even the stems and leaves

I have gotten my ginger to plant from the grocery store. We love Thai food so I also plant galangal the same way. As long as the ginger looks healthy, I think you are fine getting it from any store. If it looks dry probably not a good specimen to use.

best place is any Asian market it is about 1/2 the price of anywhere else. A lot of mainstream stores root crops are irradiated to prevent sprouting on the shelves.

As usual with me ignorance is bliss- I have reached into the ginger pot many times to break off a small piece to use. It has never seemed to slow it up. But come to think of it, I never took that small piece from a section that had stems (leaves?) growing.

That's what I was hoping to hear! I wasn't planning on selling any of it, just using it for home use. But I have no interest in having to rip up the entire plant whenever I want a piece of ginger. I picked up a root the other day, and I'll try planting it once it starts to sprout.
