Mountain Magic Tomatoes

Several months ago I mentioned that I had gotten a free small sample of Mountain Magic seeds from Bejo seeds. The main reason I wanted them was because I had such a problem with Late Blight last year. Thankfully, I have not so far had any sign of Late Blight. However, I can report that the six Mountain Magic tomatoes that I started from seed are doing well and have produced some nice tomatoes.
They vary from standard cherry in size to almost 2 inches across, and taste seems good. Also, I have had almost no problems with cracking. In summary, I would recommend growing Mountain Magic, even if you don’t have problems with Late Blight. Also, I have some pictures I would like to post when I figure out how to.

Many seed companies give their own name to a already known and sometimes lesser known seed varieties. Your tomato could be almost anything.

Renaming varieties has been outlawed since sometime in the 1930s or 1940s. A few from the 1920s were "grandfathered" since there was no means of accurately determining if they were identical or of separate parallel development.

Mountain Magic is a new hybrid developed by the U of NC and 2010 is its first year on the market. It's the result of a cross with a large-fruited type and a grape type.

The NC group has produced several "Mountain" varieties. I am growing and have grow previously Mountain Fresh and Mountain Spring. They are reliable varieties. I think they are both determinate varieties.

Although the Mountain series from UNC have been determinates, Mountain Magic is an indeterminate. That is, should keep producing until something kills it.

From what I've seen, it's a good salad or saladette type of 1½ to 2 ounce fruit. And, they indeed are blight-resistant.

Paquebot, thank's for the info about Mountain Magic being indeterminate. That does seem to be the case for the ones I have growing.

Pictures of Mountain Magic Tomatoes

Well here are two pictures
The first is of one of the plants in the garden, and the second of some picked Mountain Magic tomatoes. Note the size variation.

Size variation is common with a lot of varieties, especially those which produce a number of fruit on a single truss. The first one is invariably the biggest and then they taper down from there.
