Small Flies on potatoes and cucumbers

I have some small flies on my potato and cucumber leaves that I think are making the leaves curl and turn brown. Any ideas on what they are and how to get rid of them??!! I am at a loss.

Leafhoppers. Use soap spray. They will decrease the yield of your potatoes. French fingerlings and Elba potatoes are somewhat resistant. I plant French Fingerlings, and they do seem to resist leafhoppers. Besides, they have awesome flavor.

Do I just mix Dawn dishsoap with water and spray it on the plants? What ratio?

I think they were referring to insecticidal soap. If you need to "soap" something like spider mites Consider carving some flakes off a bar of Ivory Snow. Soap. Not detergent.

Yes, you can buy insecticidal soap or make your own. Most "dishsoap" is detergent and cannot be used. Ivory Snow, as mentioned above, or castile soap.
