Square foot - Asparagus?

We're getting ready to build a couple of 4'x8' square beds. My parents brought us a bucket of starts, and we've another 30 or so crowns on order from Starks that will be here soon. Conventional planting says to space the crowns at least 1 foot apart, but I read over the Square foot site that you could plant 4 crowns per square foot.

Anyone tried this? Results? Since they take so long, I sure don't want to start over.

The full grown crowns I've seen are EACH almost one foot in diameter and send up spears from at least that large of an area. I'm not saying don't do it, but just giving you information you might use to base your plantings distances on.

The ferns are HUGE. I'd put one per square foot.

Hmmm... okay thanks. I think I will stick with 24 plants in a 4'x4'x8' bed then, does that sound okay or still too dense?
