Gardening in small, small spaces

Many on the list may not have much yard or live in apartments and have limited space outside for gardening. They desparately want fresh vegetables over the summer. Maybe you can't till the ground you want to grow on. No problem !! Buy the bags of potting/growing soil you want, poke a hole in the bag and plant your plant seedling start or flowers right in the hole in the top of the bag. Easy to water, just pour the water thru the plant hole, you'll never get any weeds and you can mulch right over the bag so the bags don't show. A tomato stake or cage can be easily driven thru the bag into the ground below. This is the easiest, least messy way of gardening for those who only have a limited space for growing. At the end of the season, pull up your bag and spread around the dirt, then discard the empty bag. Gardening never got any easier than that !!

Hi Rusty
I think a great book for you would be Mel Bartholomew's book "Square Foot Gardening". Has lots of good information about gardening in very small places.
Good luck to you,
Michael

Container Gardening works too. It can also be done on patios and decks, houses and highrise.

That's exactly what I'm planning to do - talk about easy! Plus, you don't have to wait for the soil to thaw, dry out, etc. I have a tiny back yard on my duplex that has grass and I'm just going to cover the grass with the bags and then put pots on the small concrete patio. Hopefully the area gets enough sun (I just moved in November and we haven't had much sun since then).

THAT is a brilliant way to get little kids interested in gardening. They love dirt anyway, and growin stuff to eat in a bag of dirt has got to be a fun game, right?
