that's a nice bunch of potatoes. They are nice looking, too.
How many pounds of seed potatoes did you plant to get that yield?

Well no...here's why

What causes potatoes to turn green? The answer is a bitter-tasting chemical called solanine. Solanine is produced when the potatoes are exposed to sunlight.

Solanine is toxic if consumed in large quantities, so cut away and discard any green portions of potato before you cook with them. When storing potatoes, be sure to keep them in a place where they won't be exposed to light.

40F dark

After drying for a few hours or 2 or three days, store at 40F in dark ventilated location.

Artilce about growing and storing potatoes

Very nice looking harvest.

Enjoy, and thanks for the pictures!

Alex, thank you so much for that link. Now I know I'm not going to get any potatoes. I did so many things wrong. This was my first attempt.

But with this arsenal of info, I know I will succeed next year!

I am not sure how much we planted I think I picked up two little bags of seed potatos (the russets) and dh planted a few of our mils seed potatos (a few reds and either cobbler or kenebec). I will ask him tonight and see if he remembers how much he planted. I know we had two rows across the garden. I think the rows would be about thirty feet long at the most. He just planted them right in the ground. We didn't have any mulch this year or last. We should have some good mulch for next year. We did have a very wet and fairly cool spring (for this area) this year and I think he got the potatos in around mid April but not sure. I will ask him about that too.

I do always cut out the green spots on potatos. Dh calls that "sunburned". We store the potatos down in the canning room in cheap laundry baskets lined with newspapter. It is dark and dry in there. The temp down there is 60s in the summer and maybe 50s in the winter. We don't have anywhere else to store them. I don't know where I could put them that is in the 40s temps. I hope they store ok.
