Sounds like your talking about acorn squash. That recipe really sound like one I would like to try. Patty Pan squash are small size but I'm not sure of the keeping qualities.

patty pan is a summer squash, I wouldn't trust it to keep.

you might be thinking of dumpling squash.
I like Golden Acorn and Buttercup for taste. Both keep quite well, also.
Hubbard store very well, and there are smaller varieties.
The flesh of Buttercup also makes some of the best 'pumpkin pie'.
